Rudis Olympic Wrestling Team Photo Shoot

For a promotional video shoot with Rudis, a premier wrestling shoe company sponsoring seven members of the US Olympic Wrestling Team, we were tasked with creating an immersive background environment projected onto a 5 corner cyc wall and reflected on a mirror stage. The goal was to minimize room depth and hide all corners, giving the illusion of an expansive open sky behind the wrestlers.

The content needed to be wrapped on the walls in a way that is tuned to the real-world placement of the camera in the room. We were able to achieve this using three high-powered projectors blended across the curved corners of the studio to create one seamless image, warping the content with mapping software to present the content correctly for the position of the camera. The result was a distinctive look that set the tone for the shoot as well as the ability to change content and adjust colors and brightness for the camera in real time.

Using projectors instead of LED screens allowed us to scale the projected background content to the available space, creating a more flexible studio set-up. Projectors offer similar frame rate capabilities, so we were able to shoot video at 60fps for use as slow motion footage in post-production. Projected video can also offer a smoother in camera look than LED because there’s no noticeable pitch, or distance between pixels, the way there is on LED panels.
